I was born in Yorkshire and so was Michael Parkinson. In my younger days I used to watch him on a local news and current affairs program called Look North on Granada Television. He was often to be seen standing in a field doing an outside broadcast. He had a humorously cynical view of the world and I used to enjoy his reports a lot.

Later in his career he fronted a programme called Cinema, a critical review of contemporary film. Again he brought a world weary cynicism to the task. I still treasure his description of a particular actor who, he claimed, had "...eyes like rissoles in the snow."; a phrase that I felt was a delightful adaptation of the somewhat risqué original.

But he is most famous for his TV chat show. With casual, understated charm he would spend an hour just talking to his guests. It sounds like a recipe for disaster, but it was riveting television.

Parky is his autobiography. As you might expect, it is charming, sometimes cynical, sometimes screamingly funny and sometimes very moving. It is riveting reading
