Slights is a difficult book to classify if one is wanting to hang a genre specification on a book. If push comes to shove, then I would have to describe Slights as a horror story, but not of the grue and gristle sort. No, this is a creep show. I know very little about Kaaron Warren, but I suspect that this is her first book. What I do know is that she can create very unsympathetic characters and make you care about them; and that takes skill.

Without giving too much away Slights is about a self-absorbed or self-obsessed young women who turns to murder and attempted suicide in an effort to exorcise her own demons. But she keeps running into those demons in her own private after-life way station – and they hate her.

I found Slights both difficult and easy to read. Difficult because I needed to take breaks, but easy as the story fair romped along and I was wondering what would happen next.

Read this book: you’ll be offended and delighted at turns. I’m still not sure how I really feel about the book, but I am pleased that I read it. Just be prepared to be creeped out a lot.
