Some people have come to the George R.R.
Martin’s series A Song of Ice and Fire by way of the books
and others by way of the TV series A Game of Thrones, but if they
were asked to name the most memorable character in either of those iterations of the story
most would propose Tyrion Lannister, the under-height Lannister, for that accolade. Tyrion
lacks the size, strength or attractiveness of the other principal characters. By dint of
personality he commands loyalty from a few, the rest of the time he has to rely on charm
and cunning – or wit and wisdom if you prefer – to get his way or escape serious
harm.
In this comparatively small volume (compared to the books in A
Song of Ice and Fire series), George R.R. Martin has assemble some of the
more memorable bon mots of Tyrion Lannister. I hadn’t realised he had said so many.
As an added bonus there are illustrations by Jonty Clark.
This is a pleasure of a book to read. If one page doesn’t evoke a
smile the next will. Definitely one to put on a handy shelf, because if you have more than
a passing interest in the books or the show you will find yourself returning to this book
again and again.

They say I’m half a man. What does that make the lot of you?
Full of pithy quotes from Tyrion broken into sections - such as ‘On
Being A Dwarf’ and ‘The Human Condition’ – this book is a selection of
short quotes we’ve heard him utter. Tyrion is the dwarf with a brain the size of a
planet and a heart of (tarnished) gold in the saga A Song of Ice and Fire.
The illustrations by Jonty Clark are cleverly drawn and catch the image of the Imp for
every section.
It’s a great little book to carry around to give you a chuckle. Now
excuse me, I’m off to re-watch my Game of Throne DVDs.
